In youth soccer drills, the basis of a game is its defense and though I strongly believe in this, you may have your own opinions. Both sides in the game are said to have played best defensive soccer, when the score remains 0-0.

Yet, in kids soccer drills, there are two characteristics of winning a game. One is by demonstrating an outstanding defense. And the second is when a team has a huge offense, capable of conquering the other team’s defense.

Your players will not be able to score if they cannot acquire the ball. Some coaches have a tendency to train their players in either defense or offense. But, complete training of players requires them to play defense when the ball is with the other team and offense when they themselves have the ball.

During youth soccer practice, the players who fail to keep the ball in their possession should go after the ball at once. This works well because the player from whose custody the ball goes is the one closest to it. As a result, this player should try to put pressure on the one who has the possession of the ball now.

In other words, he must try to get the ball back as quickly as he can. This will also allow sufficient time to the teammates who must pick up and quickly get into their defensive positions. This way the opponent player who has the ball will not be allowed a free run on the field.

Players can be made to learn these skills by following the given techniques;

Immediate chase: When implemented correctly in youth soccer drills, it exerts a lot of pressure on the opponents from all sides. And eventually this has the effect of them losing the possession of the ball or executing a wrong pass.

Fall back and delay: This necessitates the remaining team members to fall back, and challenge the opponent with the ball and delay him or her from getting into their team’s goal area.

Since the center of the field is the trickiest place to be in, ask your players to force the opposition player with the ball towards the touchline. This ultimately leads to the player not being able to make a pass and also move around in different directions.

Arc of Concentration: When we talk of scoring, the Arc of Concentration is the riskiest area. The arc of concentration receives the maximum number of goals. So it’s very important to teach the players in youth soccer coaching to concentrate on moving the ball outside of this area.

This arc is right ahead of the goal. It begins from one corner post of the goal and goes all the way through the corner of the goal box and on to the touchline. A goal is possible when the ball is in this area.

The above methods are the easiest and most effective in teaching players effective game strategies and youth soccer drills.

Practice sessions in youth soccer coaching should include suitable drills that help players learn the basics. Make sure that every practice starts with adequate warm-up and stretch. These stretching and warm-up exercises prepare the player’s body for physical activity in the game.

Each practice session that you undertake must have an objective. For this reason, identify and then focus on just one or two drills per week. Design your training program in such a way that every week you cover a different set of drills. When players start with the practice matches, they should be made to perform such drills that show up their areas if improvement.

A good number of matches are won because one team out of the two wears out through the end of the play. For this reason, make sure that your fitness training include drills where a soccer ball is used a great deal.

The kids soccer drills should teach the players everything that they should know about soccer. “Karaoke” drill makes the players achieve these skills. Practicing it makes the players run, handle the ball, and keep their balance along with building cardiac endurance.

The young players most likely enjoy the game of soccer when they are continuously scoring goals. During the practice sessions, have the players perform such youth soccer drills that have the maximum scope for players to score goals.

1. Stationery ball being shot by a stationery player.

2. Stationery ball being shot by a moving player.

3. Moving ball being shot by a static player.

4. A moving player being shot by a moving player.

Youth soccer coaching should involve teaching the players to kick the ball effectively while shooting. A lot of players have the tendency to take shots from the close range using the inside of their feet. This helps the players improve their shooting capabilities.

When in situations where more strength is needed, instruct the players to use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. While their toes should point downwards, the ankles should be locked.

Elevation of the shoot is also affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Ask the players to put their non-kicking foot a little ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot lower to the ground. Make sure that the players are focused on striking the ball. You can remove all the distracting equipment such as players and balls so that they focus better.

As the players keep progressing on their shooting skills, raise the bar so that their growth continues. As an example, when they show improvement with their shooting, make them work with the balls at increased speed and levels.
